East Han Buddha's head made of elephant bone

Postby sliu » March 5th, 2010, 4:20 pm

Check out our blog about a Buddha's head made of elephant bone. It's gracefully carved with Han-eight-cuts technology, which was invented in Han Dynasty in jade carving.

This Buddha's head carving is in the collection of our co-founder Xuepeng Liu's. It was acquired in an auction.

The material was a piece of bone from the throat of an elephant. It was carved more than 2000 years ago and is already fossilized. The yellowed bone has become hard and has an oily look and feel from 2000 years of human handling.

You know, I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I've never seen an ivory done in the eight cuts style and I've never seen an ivory Buddha from the East Han. What makes you so sure it's real? On the blog it says that it belongs to the co-owner of this website. What is its provenance?

The owner of the buddha, Xuepeng Liu, who is also the co-founder of My Crystal Bridge, had the buddha head appraised by a credited Chinese auction house and eventually sold the buddha through this auction house for a good price.
